Whaling National Historical Park
Did you know that we have a National Park right here in New Bedford? Since 1996, 13 city blocks in downtown have been designated as a historic area to teach people from all over the world about whaling and New Bedford’s role in it. Lots of the Park’s resources are available online and you can learn a lot about whaling and New Bedford right from your couch!
Spend some time exploring the Park’s website. You can tour some of our city’s historic buildings, read about some of our residents and download an activity book full of fun stuff!
Junior Ranger: Journey Through New Bedford
Read and explore in their online storybook. It teaches about lots of famous people and places in New Bedford. While you’re reading, think about the questions on the right.
Did any of the names in the story sound familiar to you? Where do you know them from?
Do you recognize any of the places? Which ones have you visited?
Would you want to go on a voyage on a whale ship?
How big do you think those ships are compared to our boats at CBC?
Would you eat hippopotamus?
Besides whales, what other sea animals might whalers have seen during their voyage? Have you seen them in Clark’s Cove?
Why is New Bedford called “The City That Lit the World”?
What is the Underground Railroad?
Have you ever tried Johnny Cakes?
Where are some of the places that the whalers went during their voyages? Have you been to any of those places? Would you like to go?
